About Counselling

What is Counselling and why see a counsellor? We are all faced with painful situations at times and feel unable to cope on our own. Counselling can help you to feel more in control of events by supporting you, assisting you to identify what your main problems or issues are, guiding you to explore alternative perspectives and working through an appropriate course of action. Counselling can help you to get in touch with strengths and qualities that you have, that will assist you to deal with your problems and to bring about the changes that you would like.

You might seek counselling after the death of a loved one, after the break up of a relationship or having been made redundant. These are all "loss issues" which have to be worked through. Counselling cannot bring that person or the job back, but it can help you to come to terms with and accept the loss, and to move on in your life.

Other reasons to seek counselling are past issues that have surfaced and made you aware that they are effecting how you feel (perhaps with low self esteem or depressed) or how you react to othrs, e.g. problems in a relationship. To hit a low point in your life can be a trigger to acknowledge that you have a problem. Seeking counselling is a positive way of dealing with such a situation. By having counselling you will be setting time aside for, and learning to value yourself. If you value yourself others will too.

What benefits can you expect from Counselling? After coming to counselling clients have reported feeling: better able to cope with life/their problems; calmer; more positive; higher self esteem and enjoying better relationships with family members/peers/colleagues.
